Ligier Automotive Selected for the Next Generation of LMP2

A new chapter begins for Ligier in endurance racing, the discipline that shaped the brand's identity. In 2028, Ligier Automotive will supply LMP2 teams with its next-generation sports prototype, the Ligier JS P228. A major recognition for the French constructor, selected by the ACO and FIA as one of two approved chassis suppliers for the 2028 to 2032 seasons.

From the JS2 to LMP2: Endurance Racing in Ligier's DNA

Ligier's story began in endurance racing. In 1975, the Ligier JS2 claimed a remarkable second place at the 24 Hours of Le Mans — a major milestone for the young brand. Shortly thereafter, Guy Ligier shifted his focus to Formula 1, where his team competed for over two decades. Half a century later, that first success in endurance still resonates as Ligier Automotive returns to a key role in the LMP2 category.

Ligier made its modern-era comeback to endurance racing in 2014 with the Ligier JS P2, its first Ligier LMP2 sports prototype. The return was ambitious and immediately successful: pole position and second place in LMP2 at the 2014 24 Hours of Le Mans, a FIA WEC world title in 2015, and a historic win at the 24 Hours of Daytona in 2016 — the first ever for a French manufacturer. That same year, the Ligier JS P2 also claimed victory at Sebring and Petit Le Mans — a triple win not seen since Ferrari in 1998 and unmatched since 2016.

In 2017, Ligier unveiled the JS P217, its second-generation LMP2. It won the opening round of the ELMS at Silverstone, claimed victory at Laguna Seca, finished third at Le Mans in 2018, and concluded the ELMS season with two wins at Spa and Portimão.

“Endurance racing has shaped Ligier's identity. It's at the core of our history and has guided our development for over ten years. Returning to endurance in 2014, building a full prototype lineup, embracing new energies… all of this naturally led us to submit our bid for this next generation of LMP2.”

A Decade of Diversification and Innovation

Since its return to endurance in 2014, Ligier Automotive has continuously expanded its expertise. Alongside LMP2, the constructor has developed a complete lineup of racing cars: over 300 LMP3s produced across all generations, the Ligier JS P4 for drivers starting their endurance journey, the GT Ligier JS2 R, the one-off JS PX prototype, and most recently, the limited-edition JS P3X launched to celebrate ten years of LMP3 success.

Beyond endurance racing, Ligier Automotive has become a key player in the formula car segment with its Ligier JS F4, JS F3, and JS F422 — the exclusive chassis for FIA-sanctioned championships in the United States. In early 2025, Ligier strengthened its position with the acquisition of Mygale, now Ligier Advanced Technologies, the supplier for FIA F4 championships in France, India, and China.

A pioneer in future mobility, Ligier Automotive also developed its first hydrogen-powered vehicle, the Ligier JS2 RH2, in partnership with Bosch Engineering. A strategic milestone that reflects the group's commitment to energy transition.

One year after the Ligier JS P325 – Ligier's third-generation LMP3 – was unveiled at the 24 Hours of Le Mans circuit in June 2024, 31 Ligier JS P325s are entered for the 2025 edition of Road to Le Mans.

A Commitment Equal to the Challenge

In this context of ongoing growth, Ligier Automotive submitted its bid for the next generation of LMP2, as part of the ACO and FIA's tender process. The proposal, submitted on May 9, 2025, involved all company departments, with a strong focus on performance, cost efficiency, and durability.

“We had no choice but to apply. It was an obvious decision — a continuation of the story we've been writing for over ten years in endurance. This new LMP2 generation is a major step forward for the ecosystem we've helped build. We believe strongly in this category and in the essential role it plays for teams, drivers, and manufacturers alike.”

The future sports prototype will join the Ligier lineage as the Ligier JS P228. It will make its competitive debut in 2028.

“It's an immense source of pride — and a great responsibility,” says Jacques Nicolet. “Being chosen as one of two suppliers for this new LMP2 era is an honor and a commitment. The entire company is fully invested in delivering a chassis that is high-performing, reliable, durable, and meets the expectations of our teams.”
