Ligier JS2 RS: The New Carbon Monocoque GT from Ligier Automotive

From the iconic Ligier JS2 of the 1970s to the hydrogen-powered JS2 RH2 and the Ligier JS2 R, the lineage of Ligier Automotive GT race cars has continued to evolve. In 2025, a new chapter begins with the Ligier JS2 RS—a sharper, more performance-focused GT built for endurance racing. At the same time, Ligier Automotive continues to develop the Ligier JS2 R with technical upgrades aimed at delivering greater reliability, driving enjoyment, performance, and durability.

A Purebred Racing GT Lineage

In 2018, to mark its 50th anniversary, Ligier Automotive unveiled the Ligier JS2 R. Inspired by the original Ligier JS2 of the 1970s—the last GT model produced by the brand before its entry into Formula 1 in 1976—the JS2 R honors a legendary car that claimed second place at the 1975 24 Hours of Le Mans. That iconic podium finish will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2025.

From the outset, the Ligier JS2 R was a hit. Purpose-built for racing, it sold 50 units in its very first year. Today, more than 120 Ligier JS2 R cars are competing on racetracks around the globe.

Ligier JS2 RS: A Sharpened GT That's Easy to Master

In 2025, the family grows with the arrival of the Ligier JS2 RS—a bold new version built for performance while preserving the key features of the JS2 R: controlled running costs, enhanced safety, extended service intervals, true two-seat configuration, and immediate driving enjoyment.

“With the Ligier JS2 RS, we wanted to take performance further while keeping what made the JS2 R successful—an affordable, reliable, and fun car to drive for all enthusiasts, especially gentleman drivers.” – Jacques Nicolet, President of Ligier Automotive.

A GT Race Car Spec Sheet

The Ligier JS2 RS features a specific carbon monocoque chassis, FIA EII SC homologated and compliant with the 2025 LMP3 static tests. It's fitted with a homologated roll cage and Zylon side protection panels. Additional components include a front crash box, hydraulic power steering, and a BREMBO steel braking system built for 24-hour races. On the electronics side, the JS2 RS is equipped with a MoTeC ECU, Bosch ABS, and traction control.

Its 3.5L Ford V6 Ecoboost engine delivers up to 650 horsepower and is paired with a SADEV SL 90-20 EVO gearbox. A sharp new aerodynamic package wraps the car in a carbon splitter, underfloor, and rear diffuser—giving it the muscular silhouette of a GT built for the track.

“The Ligier JS2 RS embodies our vision of a modern GT—a fusion of technology, safety, and performance, all while keeping the racing spirit that's driven Ligier for over 50 years.” – Jacques Nicolet, President of Ligier Automotive.

A Model Built for Racing

The Ligier JS2 RS is designed for drivers ready to take the next step—with a carbon monocoque chassis, strong performance, driver-focused safety, and eligibility across numerous racing series. It's available starting at €255,000 before tax.

New Upgrades for the Ligier JS2 R

While launching the JS2 RS, Ligier Automotive remains committed to the Ligier JS2 R. New upgrades have been introduced to meet current and future customer expectations for performance, reliability, and longevity.

These upgrades include:

- A new braking system with racing calipers,

- Reinforced pivots,

- Improved gearbox lubrication for the 3MO transmission to enhance durability.

These braking/suspension upgrades and the 3MO gearbox lubrication kit will be mandatory starting in the 2026 season in the Ligier JS Cup France and Ligier European Series.

In parallel, the 3.7L Ford V6 engine—discontinued in 2023—has been replaced by the 3.5L Ford V6, now fitted on all new Ligier JS2 R models. This change will be optional for the 2026 and 2027 seasons in Ligier championships, but mandatory starting in 2028, or earlier in case of engine failure.

An optional “endurance” version of the Sadev gearbox is also available. Designed to handle high power outputs in long-distance races, it is not mandatory in Ligier championships. Where different engines (3.5L / 3.7L) and gearbox combinations coexist, a Balance of Performance (BoP) will be applied to ensure fair competition.

All new Ligier JS2 R cars produced from 2025 onward will be delivered with:

- The new braking/suspension kit,

- The 3.5L engine.

A GT Line More Vibrant Than Ever

With the Ligier JS2 RS, Ligier Automotive expands its well-established GT race car lineup. At the same time, it continues to develop the Ligier JS2 R with technical enhancements to ensure strong performance, reliability, and long-term operation.

More than 50 years after the first JS2 was introduced, the story continues. On track and in the paddock, the passion burns just as bright.
