IMSA: The Ligier JS P320 scores a double in Canada!
The fourth round of the IMSA WeatherTech Championship took place on the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park circuit on 7 - 9 July. From free practice and qualifying to the race itself, the Ligier JS P320's stranglehold on its rivals never weakened! #74 entered by Riley emerged victorious from the weekend with Jr III Racing's #30 finishing second.
• The #30 Ligier JS P320 run by Jr III Racing driven by Ari Balogh and Garret Grist led the two free practice sessions on Friday and Saturday setting the fastest time in no. 1 in 1:12.270s and in no. 2 in 1:11.766s. #74 entered by Riley for Gar Robinson and Felipe Fraga, the championship leaders, finished second in both.
• In the early afternoon on Saturday, Robinson at the wheel of the #74 Ligier JS P320 clinched his second consecutive pole position of the season in the IMSA WeatherTech Championship. The American was the fastest of the LMP3 drivers with a lap in 1:12.946s.
• The start of the race was given on Sunday at midday. The #74 Ligier JS P320 made a stunning getaway and held onto first place. But on lap 68 when the first yellow flag of the race was waved it was overtaken by Jr III Racing's#30. The latter stayed in front for 40 laps. Then with a few minutes to go to the chequered flag, #74 closed in on its rival and snatched first place adding a third victory to its results of the season. It continues to dominate the overall classification.
• “It was a crazy race,” said Fraga. “Today, I think they were a little bit faster than us, especially in the straights. … In the GT traffic I basically caught him like 2-3 seconds in two laps […] I think he didn't expect me to try in the last corner, and I did it.”
• The #30 Ligier JS P320 finished second again after the Watkins Glen round a few weeks earlier. Garret Grist was the quickest of the LMP3 drivers in the race setting the fastest lap in 1: 12.420s.
The next round will be held at Road America on 4 - 6 August.
