Le Mans Classic 2026: Sports Prototypes from the Ligier Workshops Back on Track
From July 3 to 5, 2026, Le Mans Classic brought together several generations of cars from the workshops now united under the Ligier Automotive name. On Grid 10 — Legends of Le Mans, seven sports prototypes built between 2008 and 2015 returned to the full 24 Hours of Le Mans circuit: OAK Pescarolo LMP1 and LMP2, Morgan LMP2 and Ligier JS P2.
Their presence highlighted the continuity of the know-how developed by the Ligier Automotive teams in the world of endurance sports prototypes. From sports prototypes designed for the greatest races to models now maintained, restored or supported by Ligier Classic, several chapters of the French manufacturer's history came back to life on the Le Mans track.
OAK Pescarolo, Morgan and Ligier Sports Prototypes at the Front
From qualifying, the 2008 #21 OAK Pescarolo LMP2 of François Heriau stood out by taking both daytime pole position and nighttime pole position in LMP2, ahead of Alexandre Leroy's #28 Ligier JS P2.
The races confirmed this performance. In Race 1, Alexandre Leroy won in LMP2 with the #28 Ligier JS P2, while Andy Cummings finished third in the category with the #47 Morgan LMP2.
In Race 2, François Heriau took the lead in LMP2 at the wheel of the #21 OAK Pescarolo, ahead of Alexandre Leroy. Jacques Nicolet finished just off the LMP2 podium with the #26 Ligier JS P2.
In Race 3, François Heriau finished second in the category, ahead of Alexandre Leroy and Jacques Nicolet.
The Ligier JS2 Also on Track
Le Mans Classic 2026 also featured two Ligier JS2s in action on Grid 6. The #80 Ligier JS2, driven by the father-and-son duo Olivier and Émile Breittmayer, delivered a strong performance in Race 1, finishing fifth overall in the grid and taking victory in the GT2 class.
A Ligier Story Still Alive
Beyond the results, the 2026 edition of Le Mans Classic was above all an opportunity to see several chapters of Ligier history come back to life in one place: on the Le Mans circuit.
From the Ligier JS2 to the Ligier JS P2, along with the OAK Pescarolo and Morgan LMP2, these models continue to do what they were designed to do: drive, race and carry forward a story that is still very much alive.
