Back-to-back Titles for the Ligier JS P320 in Brazil: A. Mattheis Motorsport Clinches Double Crown
On Saturday, November 30, 2024, the Ligier JS P320 #9 from A. Mattheis Motorsport secured the overall championship and the P1 class title in the Império Endurance Brasil series. Xandinho Negrão and Marcos Gomes delivered a historic moment for their team on the Ayrton Senna Circuit in Goiânia. This iconic Brazilian track, named after the Formula 1 legend, added an extra layer of significance to their achievement. The title came down to the penultimate lap when Negrão made a decisive move to take second place, a result sufficient to claim the double crown. This marks the second consecutive year a Ligier team has triumphed in the championship.
A Season Defined by Consistency and Resilience
The path to the title was paved with unwavering consistency. Negrão and Gomes finished in second place six times over the course of the season's eight rounds.
"Finally, we've won the P1 championship. We didn't claim a race victory, but our consistency paid off. Congratulations to the entire team and Andreas Mattheis [Team Principal]," said an emotional Xandinho. "After coming so close last year, this title feels like a well-earned reward. Performance-wise, it wasn't the season we hoped for, but we gained intelligence and experience," Gomes added.
An Emotional Weekend
Goiânia holds a special place in the team's history. It was here in 2020 that Xandy Negrão claimed his final victory, driving a Mercedes AMG GT3 alongside Xandinho and Andreas Mattheis. This weekend, Mattheis announced his retirement, handing over the reins of the team to chief engineer Guilherme Gonçalves.
"This double title is the perfect way to end my career. I pass the team's future to Guiga with confidence and pride," Mattheis said, underscoring the importance of this transition.
A Promising Future for A. Mattheis Motorsport
The 2025 endurance championship season kicks off on March 29 at the brand-new Raceville Circuit in Brotas. Under Guilherme Gonçalves' leadership, the team aims to build on Mattheis' legacy and remain at the top.
"This title is the result of our strategy and experience. The future looks ambitious," said the new team principal, brimming with enthusiasm for the seasons ahead.
