FR Americas: Triple victory for Raoul Hyman and the #27 Ligier JS F3 at Mid-Ohio!

23 – 26 June 2022 – TJ Speed Motorsports and Raoul Hyman driving the #27 Ligier JS F3 scored a triple in the third round of the FR Americas Championship on the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Thanks to these three victories Hyman remains in the top spot in the championship with almost 60 points in hand over his rivals!

The weekend kicked off with free practice dominated by the #27 TJ Speed Motorsports Ligier JS F3 driven by Raoul Hyman. The Briton set the fastest lap in a time of 1m 19.547s, almost a second quicker than the rest of the field! It was the same story in qualifying in the early afternoon. He clinched pole position for the first race of the weekend by setting the fastest lap in 1m 20.564s.

Race 1

Start of the first 30-minute heat. Despite grip issues slowing his pace and a yellow flag at the end of the race, Hyman at the wheel of his #27 Ligier JS F3 held on to his lead over his pursuers. He took the chequered flag in first place clinching his fourth victory of the season and setting the fastest lap in the process ensuring that he was on pole on the grid for race 2.

“That was a tough one, honestly,” said Raoul Hyman. “The start of the race, the grip level was just really low. I looked at the lap times a couple times at the start, and I think we were something like two seconds off what we were used to doing (...)  I also knew that a couple of guys behind me put four new tires on, and we didn't have any tires (…) I'm really grateful that we did actually have the pace and that we were able to win the race and get the fastest lap, as well.”

Race 2

Victory no.2 for Raoul Hyman! The driver in #27 Ligier JS F3 again stood on the topmost step of the podium after a race which he led from start to finish. It was the British driver's fifth win in the eight races held since the start of the season.

“My car really suits the track,” said Hyman on the podium. “It's a really rewarding track. When you finish the race, there's a lot of adrenaline and it's nice to let that go when you cross the line. Driving the car around here is what drivers dream about. (…) When you can drive a car like this, at this level, everything just becomes a lot easier.”

Race 3

A flawless weekend for the TJ Speed Motorsports team and their #27 Ligier JS F3. Under threatening skies the tyre choice strategy proved to be the key to the outcome of the race. Raoul Hyman opted for rain tyres and Mac Clark, driver of the Future Star Racing#25, chose slicks. A fine drizzle began falling on the second-last lap and quickly transformed itself into torrential rain that caused #25 to spin among others. Hyman won the race with more than 50 seconds in hand.

“Three out of three—let's go,” exclaimed Hyman as he climbed from the cockpit. “That race was cool. We had a lead, but I knew there were guys behind me on slicks. (…) When they told me the gap was 18 seconds, I figured ‘okay, that's three laps, and they'll be on you and they'll pass you. So, just keep going.' Then the rain came down at the end.”
